100, 200 and 300 Famous Japanese Mountains

Japan’s Most Prominent Peaks

For better or worse, Kyuya Fukada’s 1964 best seller “100 Famous Japanese Mountains” (日本百名山 Nihon Hyaku-meizan) has had a profound influence on modern alpinism in Japan. It has led to a decades long hiking boom particularly amongst the middle-aged and elderly with all his 100 famous mountains highly coveted by climbers. Over the years the list has been added to with a 200 and even a 300 mountain showcase. Incredibly a small number of devotes have managed to bag all of them including the intrepid Yamaholic Grace along with the indomitable Yoki Tanaka a professional adventurer who features on NHK “Great Traverse”.

For a bit of background behind why these initial 100 mountains were included in Kyuya Fukada’s book the excellent English translation One Hundred Mountains of Japan by Martin Hood is a worthwhile read. Also check out Wes Lang’s Hyakumeizan page which has a link to each mountain. In 1984 the Fukada Club, a fan club of the late author created the 200 Famous Mountains (Nihon Nihyaku-meizan 日本二百名山) by adding 100 new mountains. Preceding this was the Japanese Alpine Club which in 1978 devised the 300 Famous Mountains (日本三百名山 Nihon Sanbyaku-meizan). Just to confuse matters the 300 list includes 101 mountains as Arasawa-dake is included in the 200 mountains but not in the 300 mountains.

  • How did I miss this post? Perhaps it was a busy autumn (including one Hyakumeizan ascent). Anyway, an excellent and succinct write-up of the Hyakumeizan phenomenon, and thanks for the book plug. Your post also performs a public service, as this is the first combined listing of all three “hundred mountain” lists that I’ve seen in English. Neat! Once one has all the mountains lined up, as it were, it’s interesting to see how many of the peaks listed in the 200 and 300 lists were actually mentioned in passing within the original Hyakumeizan book. It seems impossible to escape the influence of the original Meizanologist, Fukada Kyuya…

    • Thanks for that and you’re right, you would think it would be easy to find a combined list of these mountains but apparently not. The tough part was trying to reconcile names. Take the first one Mt. Rishiri, it’s written as Rishiri-dake in Kyuya Fukada’s book but also goes by Rishiri-zan. There’s also plenty of discrepancies regarding elevations. In the end I just went with the general consensus. As for actually climbing them as you can see I’ve barely scratched the surface. I hope it will provide some inspiration to tackle a few more!

  • I’m loving this website. The information you provide is invaluable and the detail in the research is appreciated. I just wanted to thank you for all the information, many which I have used as a starting point on many of my own little adventures, so thank you kindly.

  • Hey, there appears to be a couple of errors. Mt Moriyoshi (#2018) is firmly in Akita, not Iwate prefecture. Conversely Mt Yakeishidake (#2015) is in Iwate, not Akita. Cheers for the list, Stefan

  • Had been looking good for this list for a while, shall have started here!
Sent you a couple of coffees to thank you. Cheers David, glad to read you started hiking again!
