Petzl Tikkina 2 Headlamp Review

Petzl Tikkina 2 headlamp Designed for Everyday Lighting Needs

With dusk quickly approaching you set up camp and start preparing dinner only to find that your trusty headlamp has been blissfully illuminating the inners of your pack all day. With your batteries all but depleted, reality dawns of facing the night in darkness. I think many hikers can well relate to this all too familiar scenario. Whilst reversing the batteries or throwing in a second set might have averted this predicament its thankfully for the most part unnecessary as headlamps these days are hard to actuate even when rumbling around in your pack all day. The Petzl Tikkina 2 is no exception and in the six months of road testing the headlamp I’m yet to encounter this and remain confident the likelihood is low.

The French manufacturer Petzl has been making durable lightweight headlamps since mid-1970s and is a world leader in mountaineering equipment. The Petzl Tikkina 2 reviewed here falls under the classic headlamp series and is suitable for everyday lighting needs. The strength of the Tikkina 2 is its battery stamina of 190 hours with economic use and 55 hours at maximum. Whilst longer than most Petzl headlamps the trade-off is a maximum brightness rated at 23 lumens and 13 lumens with economic use. While not sufficient for more challenging environments and night navigation, it works well for general campsite use. The headlamp is lightweight at around 80 grams with three AAA alkaline batteries and the tiltable lighting head adds further functionality.

Whilst the headlamp lacks some of the advanced features such as reactive lighting, having two selectable levels of brightness will be enough for many users. The Tikkina 2 has a robust construction and IPX 4 splash proof water resistance. For an affordable no nonsense headlamp the Tikkina 2 remains an appealing choice.

BOTTOM LINE

A lightweight and durable headlamp for campsite and general purpose use. Extended battery life of 190 hours makes it a compelling choice.

    • No, it is not possible to change the bulb on the Petzl Tikkina 2 Headlamp. The headlamp uses LEDs, which are not designed to be replaced by the user.
